Position Information

Vice President (Chairing, Events and Speakers):

  • Shall deputise for the President, providing leadership and direction to the other Committee roles where required.
  • Shall be responsible for organising various social events for the society, which should be varied and may be speaking related or not.
  • Shall be responsible for ensuring that the society’s public debates, when recorded, are published online in a timely manner.
  • Shall be able to veto presidential decisions on constitutional matters and committee positions with support of the other Vice President.
  • Shall be the principal officer responsible for communication with the Guild regarding activities run by the society.
  • Will assist the other Vice President in drawling up opportunities for accessing guild funding and a sponsorship document.
  • Shall ensure all members are engaging with the society.
  • Shall be responsible for ensuring members remain safe and well during social events.
  • Shall be responsible for organising frequent speaker events and debates during Term Time, these debates shall consist of 2 speakers with opposing views on the motion that the chairs have deemed useful to the debate.
  • Shall have a responsibility to ensure panels are balanced with regard to viewpoint.
  • Shall be responsible for ensuring the values of the society are upheld in these show debates.
  • Shall select the motions (topics) for debate, with input from the president where needed. their choices should be presented to the committee who shall be given the opportunity to voice concerns. Then a vote will take place within the debates team (chairs + alumni officers) with the president breaking the tie if needed.
  • Shall chair and moderate the debate, remaining personally impartial and ensuring that decorum and equity is maintained by all parties.
  • Shall ensure that the format of the debate is kept to, including giving the audience time to deliver 30 second floor speeches.
  • In charge of working with the Speaker Secretary to organise speakers, including inviting them, and sorting travel and accommodation and speaker fees if financially viable.
  • Shall attend welfare training and be aware of the welfare of members
  • Shall be responsible for society publicity where appropriate in the role
