PRESIDENT
The President represents all of our members and is the face of the society. Therefore, this person needs to be a friendly face and strong representative of the society who is present at as many events as possible! They should be passionate about dance and the society, dedicated, organised, and able to manage their time effectively. They should also be an approachable person that members and the committee can come to with any problems, both dance-related and otherwise. They should also be confident at speaking to new members, addressing the society at large scale events, and talking to outside contractors.
The President oversees the whole society. This involves:
- Delegating tasks and assisting committee members with their roles;
- Ensuring deadlines are set and met by members, committee, the Guild and contracted third parties;
- Offering creative and practical solutions to unforeseen problems;
- Leading the selection of both the Competition and Performance Teams following auditions;
- Undertaking a lot of administration and organisational work, including booking rooms and timetabling over 30 hours of dance each week for the whole society, avoiding availability and coaching clashes, whilst submitting activities, risk assessments and health & safety forms for each of those hours;
- Assisting the Vice President with the planning and running of both Winter and Spring Showcases, supporting them with their increased workload where necessary;
- Organising meetings with committee to discuss problems and suggest improvements;
- Organising Freshers’ Week and Refreshers’ Week events;
- Attending and supporting society events;
- In most instances organising the AGM and any EGMs that occur during the year;
- Communicating and collaborating with other societies;
- Managing the society’s multiple messaging inboxes alongside the Publicity Officer, so efficiency and communication is essential to keep our members well-informed;
- Overseeing and assisting the Treasurer with the financial prosperity of the society;
- Exercising a deciding vote on many matters, and being fair yet strong in doing what is right for the society and its members when there are differences in opinion. The President is responsible for making the final decisions, so needs to be decisive! There is little room for self-doubt in the role. The President often has to make last-minute decisions and alterations so handling pressure is also important.
Being President is incredibly rewarding, but it can be hard work! It requires work the whole year round, and being on-hand every day to answer difficult queries and problems. It requires a lot of forward-planning, being on top of both your own and other people’s roles. Because of this, it is imperative that the President is organised, good with time management, and has excellent communication skills. In instances where committee members have not been able to complete all tasks initially assigned to them, it will fall to the President to ensure the tasks are still done. Therefore, flexibility and ability to work under pressure is essential.
Due to the nature of the role, it is preferable that you have had experience on (any) committee before. However, if you possess the above qualities and are passionate about Dance Society, we would still love you to apply regardless!
