Welfare Officer can seem like a rather strenuous role but it is also a lot of fun as well. I'd say your main responsibility is to make yourself available and approachable. You're not a therapist, you're not a counsellor, you're a student like everybody else but that doesn't mean you can't be open and ready to listen to the people who come seeking your help. Some problems have obvious solutions, some don't but your role isn't always to find those solution but to listen, to be that friendly ear and to try and make everyone in the company feel as supported as possible. Ultimately, it's theatre, it's supposed to be fun! The best part about being on committee is that feeling of being part of a company and I've also really enjoyed the opportunity of having creative input into the many wonderful shows we've put on throughout the year.
