The President’s day-to-day responsibilities change drastically depending on the individual needs of EUTCo’s membership and productions.
Responsibilities include:
- Spearheading the creation of an interesting and diverse yearly theatre programme.
- Doing this with a clear vision, and deciding the programme through interviewing creatives.
- Leading the rest of the committee in weekly committee meetings, as well as being on hand to provide regular support and guidance to that team.
- The President delegates responsibilities to their committee by considering their individual strengths, and drawing those out of them!
- The President must also be approachable to all EUTCo members; a friendly face of the society who is consistently present at workshops, fundraisers and socials.
- Liaising with the Guild is a major responsibility, as well as communicating with venues and other stakeholders.
- The President is in charge of receiving, understanding, and signing venue hire contracts. This must be done while working alongside the Treasurer to ensure venue costs fit with the society’s finances.
- The President also represents EUTCo in cross-society relations such as collaborating with other theatre societies in the weekly presidents’ meetings, auditions, clash etc..
Hopefully this description helps you understand more about the role, and what would be required of you. While it is a demanding role, I think if you care, that will see you a long way. Caring about the team, about theatre and the shows you put on, and wanting to make sure everyone who gets involved with the society has the best experience possible. There are definitely highs and lows with being President, it is time consuming and challenging sometimes, but also the most rewarding role and the best experience if you’re thinking about going into a theatre management/ artistic director role in the future. I will miss EUTCo, but I cannot wait to see what next years committee do! And of course i’m always at the end of a message when you need help next year. This society is something that you will be so proud of; in the words of my predecessor to whoever’s next: be gentle with our baby. Mallie x
