Position Information

Duties: 

  • Responsible for the overall governance, financial health, reputation and development of the group. 
  • Be the principal officer and spokesperson for the Society and the chairperson of committee meetings, the AGM and EGM. 
  • To write up agendas to a high standard for every ISOC meeting, or ensure the agenda is written up by someone competent. 
  • To chair all committee and public meetings by default. 
  • Have overall responsibility for the promotion and development of the Society.
  • Ensure that the Society does not contravene The Guild’s Byelaws or any guidelines or policy of the Activities team.
  • Have the responsibility to write and sign off financial forms of the Society.
  • Have the overall responsibility to respond to communication from the Activities Team.
  • Set directions, develop, nurture and support the Society in accordance with the Vision and the Aims and Objectives stated in the Constitution.
  • Provide training and resources for the Committee where necessary and feasible.
  • Ensure the spiritual and professional development of the Committee.
  • Oversee the Committee and ensure they are fulfilling their responsibilities.
  • Support the Committee members with any task they are finding difficult, and be able to step in if necessary to make sure tasks get completed on time, and monitor best practice, ensuring the Committee is working together and functioning professionally.
  • Safeguard the welfare of the Committee, not allowing Committee responsibilities to become burdensome, making sure everyone is well-supported in their roles, and maintaining committee morale.
  • Ensure the rights of Muslim students/staff are championed on campus.
  • Liaise with external clubs and societies, universities and organisations where necessary and maintain a good relationship with parent organisation FOSIS
  • Work on establishing the Society in the wider Muslim community.
  • To ensure all the views of members of the committee are heard.
  • To ensure that the Society remains Islamically correct and balanced in all their activities.
  • To ensure a friendly and professional environment is maintained as far as possible and that relations between committee members remain friendly, professional and appropriate.


 

Requirements: 

  • To have generally exemplar Islamic manners such that the committee and the rest of the society would comfortably accept their authority. 
  • To be known to be a generally balanced individual, such that they would be able to arrive at fair decisions should a situation arise that requires a decisive judgment to be made. 
  • To have mentoring and leadership skills. 
  • To have previous experience being involved in ISOC work, perhaps sitting on a previous committee. 
  • To have adequate public speaking skills such that they will be confident to engage with audiences in the best way possible whether that be the committee, the Society as a whole or other non-ISOC audiences. 
  • To be able to easily have access to a variety of different ulema in order to seek naseeha regarding difficult or controversial judgements that must be made. 
  • Ideally, to have some kind of background seeking knowledge such that they are at least above average regarding Islamic knowledge. 
  • Ideally, to have pious company and especially keep the company of students of knowledge and ulema. 
  • To have good manners and the ability to engage in dialogue with other faith group(s) leaders. 
  • To be inspirational. 
  • To be flexible with time.
