Welfare can be the most wonderful, rewarding role, and it is a great privilege to be trusted by the members of this society. This role has taught me how to be approachable and open, always willing to listen and provide support wherever I can. A particular highlight this year for me has been when I have gone into rehearsals to do welfare checks for the company, and as a result have had the pleasure of meeting and speaking to so many lovely and talented people. Welfare is a largely vague role, so it is very much what you make it, and this can be a challenge when setting personal and professional boundaries. My advice would be to always be open and willing to help, but to also be very aware of your limits and the nature of the role, and being prepared to direct people to the right resources when something feels out of your control. It is very easy for this role to become all-consuming, so please look after yourself, set the boundaries you need to protect your own wellbeing, and make sure you have a strong support system in place. While you may be in charge of welfare for the society, you matter just as much as everyone else, so please remember that! It is a fantastic opportunity though, and I have learnt so much about empathy, and how to work productively to support people in challenging situations. I have also really enjoyed having a creative involvement in all the incredible productions this year. It is a great honour to be able to listen to so many creative ideas, and to have an input in these productions throughout the entire process.
