The elected Head of Technical Operations works to ensure the station stays on-air, and members know how to use our equipment safely. Above all, the elected individual will be a strong advocate of good technical practice in the station, and pushing our abilities in event programming. Throughout the year this includes Guild sabbatical officer elections, 24 Hours live, live broadcasted sports commentaries and other events committee members wish to organise. 

Where the station is taken off-air due to technical difficulties or has another problem, the elected individual will work to diagnose and resolve this issue. This may be in-person or you might be providing guidance over the phone to another committee member, but issues are not generally particularly complicated and can be fixed with basic guidance. It is worth noting that any technical problems beyond a basic system reset are not handled by the Head of Technical Operations, and instead by the Guild IT team or Broadcast Radio support. As such you should not expect yourself to hold extensive knowledge about our Broadcast Radio (Myriad) software.

Above all, strong patience and communication skills, alongside the desire to aid the station in achieving its technical goals are essential qualities. 

NOTE: An advanced level knowledge of the station’s equipment is not required, though a desire to learn technical information about our items is essential. This can very much be learnt in the role and during the handover process. This position shouldn’t be seen as an ‘on call’ role, but instead a creative position on committee to help develop the station’s technical capabilities.
