As Social Secretary you need to be bubbly, organised, and approachable. Throughout the year, you will need to organise socials (roughly one every fortnight) that include both going out and not going out activities, so that it is inclusive for everybody. You will also be responsible for organising extra events such as the Christmas Ball, and any events that can publicise the society or introduce new members. You need to be creative and outgoing in order to draw people into socials and make sure they are as fun as possible, whilst also keeping within Guild regulations and timelines (and ensuring that the event is appropriate for Dance Society members and won’t risk our reputation). Additionally, you need to be efficient, organised, proactive, and with great attention to detail. This is because you will often be contacting and negotiating with venues, as well as completing risk assessments, making budgets, and writing event descriptions for socials. You will also work closely with the President and the Treasurer to negotiate sponsorship deals for the society before the new year begins. Also communication and preparation is key, particularly as you need to get all information across to the Publicity Officer as quickly and accurately as possible, as your event cannot be publicised unless you provide them with all the information in good time. The Social Secretary is responsible for selling tickets for socials and events, and often involves handling large amounts of money or working closely with the Treasurer.
Alongside these duties, the Social Secretary is also expected to be representative at as many events as possible, and help out with society events. So while this is a very enjoyable role, it does have a fair amount of administrative work that goes on behind the scenes to ensure everything runs smoothly. We urge you to run if you feel you fit this description, as you will have the most amazing year and it is so much fun!
This year we have decided to elect 2 social secretaries! Please note that you must still run individually for the role and it will be awarded to the two candidates with the most votes.
