Position Information

Main duties include:

  • Co-ordinating the main actions of the society, including inviting and encouraging students to attend Wednesday practice nights, Sunday service ringing, hanbell practices and ECG social events.
  • Promoting the society to students at the university, primarily at Freshers Week
  • Managing the society’s social media and email accounts
  • Encouraging learners to take up ringing, and giving them the opportunity to learn with experienced teachers, in collaboration with qualified teachers at St David’s, and if needed, other Exeter towers
  • Managing communications and relationship with the Students’ Guild
  • Ensuring an equal opportunity for all members to ring to the best of their ability.

What this role looks like:

Whilst there is a lot to keep on top of as President, the job is honestly very straightforward and lots of fun! At the start of the year, you will need to do things like advertising the society in the Ringing World and organising the society’s freshers week events, which usually consists of a stall at the fair and a bit of online promotion. After the initial member sign-up period, all you really need to do is set up a group chat and keep encouraging attendance, and organise learners’ practices for any new ringers. Work in collaboration with the ringers at St David’s and be willing to help out there where you can. If you have a band, you can set up handbell practices (and hopefully won't need to have as many discussions with the Guild as I did!) The President is ultimately responsible for doing things like communicating with the Guild and ensuring the society meets the guidelines of the Activities Team, but that is unlikely to cause any issues. It’s a really worthwhile job and honestly not a big workload week-on-week, so if you are passionate about the society I would really encourage you to go for it!
