Add to BasketThe University of Exeter Freedom Society is the exclusive libertarian society on campus. We are dedicated to promoting individual liberty, free speech and free market capitalism. Our committee and membership both encompass a broad range of ideologies and opinions, as we aim to facilitate open discussions and intellectual inquiry. As a result, the Freedom Society has the highest regular attendance of any University of Exeter political society.
Every Thursday evening, we host a ‘Pint and Policy’ event. A member gives a speech on a topic close to their heart, and questions, discussions and drinks follow afterwards. P&Ps provide a relaxed, sociable and good-humoured atmosphere for students to share their ideas and discuss matters of economics, philosophy and politics – or just catch up as friends. In the past member's speeches have investigated the teachings of Friedrich Nietzsche, advocated for gold to replace GBP, or identified the institutional failings of the UK Ministry of Defence.
Alongside our weekly meetings, we host external speaker events – inviting individuals or organisations (such as MPs or the Institute of Economic Affairs) to share their ideas with us. Most recently, we hosted a talk by Dr Yaron Brook, chairman of the Ayn Rand Institute, on ‘Capitalism and the causes of War’. You can view the talk here: https://tinyurl.com/bdh573xm. Our parent organisation, The Freedom Association, is well connected with us, and provides us with access to their exclusive events and contacts.
It is our priority to be at the forefront of libertarian political activity. Unlike other societies on campus, we get involved with cutting edge ideas and promote radical and exuberant strategies for the political future of Britain.
Our monthly special events provide a great opportunity for less structured and more candid socialising. Cocktail evenings, pub crawls, dinners and black-tie poker events are just some of the things we’ve done in the past, with more exciting and ambitious things planned for the 2023-24 academic year. After any Freedom Society event you’re bound to find a few of us heading towards a night-club afterwards.
Whilst fundamentally political in our objectives, the Freedom Society provides a forum for likeminded students to meet up. A university campus can be quite hostile for someone who identifies as a libertarian, or right wing, but our society provides an open forum for discussion, where nothing is off limits. Many of our members have become great friends in the past, holidaying together and sharing houses. Come for the politics and stay for the people!
We are the most active, fun and energetic political society on campus and are serious about standing out from the stale egalitarian orthodoxy. As Thomas Sowell said:
“Freedom has cost too much blood and agony to be relinquished at the cheap price of rhetoric.”
With that in mind, we implore you to join the University of Exeter Freedom Society today!
