About Us

Meditation Society 2024/25!
This year we are excited to announce that we are expanding the number of sessions to 3 weekly sessions: (info for all our sessions will be posted on our Instagram and emailed to members every Sunday)!

Tuesday Mindfulness Session, MR2+3 Queens Building (18:30-19:30): Our Tuesday sessions will be a mindfulness meditation session led in rotation between the university’s Buddhist Chaplain John Danvers and our society President Mark who is a yoga instructor (or another committee member). These sessions will involve 2 lightly guided mindfulness meditations (around 10-15 minutes each) and finish with a discussion on a chosen theme (around 15 minutes). The discussion section in John’s sessions will be on themes around eastern philosophy e.g. mindful ethics, the self, non-attachment etc. The discussion section in Marks sessions will go over techniques and tips to help with mindfulness meditations, the science of meditation and any areas members would like help with for their practice. These sessions are ideal for those who want a more silent kind of meditation and discussions of philosophy and the science of meditation.

Wednesday Guided Session, LT7.2 Queens Building (18:00-19:00): Our Wednesday sessions will be a mix of guided meditations, society collaborations and a mix of more social mindful activities e.g. drawing and journaling. Each session will have a different theme and will be run by committee members.

Thursday Yin Yoga Class, Cornwall House Activity Room 3 (18:00-19:00): Our Thursday Session will be a Yin Yoga class run by our president Mark who is about to finish his 200-hour yoga teacher training in Vinyasa and Yin styles. These classes will be beginner friendly and will have a strong mindfulness theme. Yin yoga is a much slower form of yoga combining Traditional Chinese Medicine and Taoist Philosophy with Yoga asana. In these classes you will hold poses for much longer (for 1-5 minutes) while doing slow meditative breathing. Mark wants to end these classes with a 10–15 minute Metta Bhavana meditation. These sessions are ideal for those who struggle with seated meditations and those who like to mix up their meditation practice. If you are someone who has struggled with other styles of yoga before, we still recommend giving this a go as it’s a very different style which is mostly floor based and a lot of emphasis is put on stillness and comfort. If these sessions prove popular, we may also do a Vinyasa class alongside our Yin classes on another day. These classes will be completely free for members (as long as you are in the society group chat so you can put your tickets there if you can no longer make it) and £1.50 for non-members. Tickets will be on our society FIXR. Mats are provided but you must have a FIXR ticket to be able to come as we have limited space. The code for the free ticket will be put in the society’s members group chat.
Socials: We will be running a number of socials throughout term too so keep an eye on our Instagram!

We are also excited to announce our new book service for members! We have 35 books on topics relating to meditation, yoga, eastern philosophy etc, which you will be able to borrow for up to 30 days completely free. These will be collected and returned at society sessions. To get a book, look over our book list which is linked and message our Instagram with the book you want, your student number, and proof of membership. These books must be returned by the agreed date.
