- To provide an inclusive environment for brass, woodwind and percussion players of all abilities to play their instrument and socialise as like-minded people.
- To perform a diverse repertoire of concert band music at concerts for the university and wider community.
- To provide a platform from which individuals can further their musical experience through opportunities such as solo pieces and workshops with professional groups and schools.
Exeter University Concert Band is a large, non-auditioned group of fun and friendly musicians that welcomes woodwind, brass and percussion players of all abilities.
We rehearse every Thursday from 6.45-8.45pm in Kay House and perform concerts at the end of each university term at venues in and around Exeter including local churches and the Quay. We also perform at university events such as Arts Fest. Every Easter, we go on tour for five days of music and activities! Previous tours have included Prague, Paris, Antwerp & The Hague, Edinburgh and most recently Dusseldorf.
The music we play ranges from classical wind band repertoire such as Vaughan Williams’ English Folk Song Suite, to arrangements of familiar stage-and-screen soundtracks including Pirates of the Caribbean, Les Miserables, and Frozen just to name a few.
Concert Band offers a space to get together and play music, but we are proud to also have an extensive social calendar. Our friendly and inclusive culture is fostered through both our rehearsals and social events. University can be a scary time, but we aim to provide a fun community, whoever you are. We pride ourselves on being open to musicians of all abilities, and students from all backgrounds.
We have plenty of wellbeing support available to our members. We have a designated welfare lead, Hebe Dennison, who ensures that the wellbeing of the band is maintained. She is there to be a friendly face and listener if any welfare issues arise, and you are welcome to contact her through facebook/in person/anonymous feedback form if there is something you would like to discuss
We also ensure that our socials are a fun place to meet new people, relax, and take a step out of university life. Typical socials include a weekly post-rehearsal pub trip, wellbeing walks, pub quizzes, bowling, beach trips, end of term dinners, and a spring Music Ball with other music societies! We aim to ensure that they are free or affordable as often as possible.
At EUCB we welcome both non-drinkers and drinkers, with J2Os being a favourite at post-rehearsal pub. We never have any kind of forced drinking at socials, and there are always two sober committee members at each social!
Additional activities that take place within the year are educational workshops with local primary schools, working with the Salamanca Band and Bugles of the Rifles, and collaborating with other university concert bands to create the South West Universities Concert Band Festival.
We look forward to welcoming many new members over the next year to our special community and we hope you enjoy being a part of it as much as we do!
You can reach out to our president Gina Sealey on Facebook or by emailing her at gs647@exeter.ac.uk. You can also contact us by emailing the society account, or messaging our Facebook or Instagram pages.
