The University of Exeter’s only hiking society! Established in 1956 (hence the reluctance to replace our name with something more informative!) we have been leading weekly Saturday hikes through the stunning South West for over 60 years.
Download our walks guide for the year here, and to receive weekly walk reminders sign up to our Mailing List and join our Facebook Group'Out of Doors Society Exeter'. Photos from our adventures can be found on Instagram @outofdoors_exeter, and to explore the history of OODS, visit our website.
Tickets for coach walks are released on the Monday before each walk, at 7pm.
During each hike, please stay with the group at all times and please don't pass in front of the walk leader to avoid confusion.
Our weekly Saturday hikes take in the very best of the countryside near to and far from Exeter. We hike across National Parks (Dartmoor and Exmoor), Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (the Quantock and Mendip Hills), along rugged coastlines (the Jurassic and Cornish Coast) with time at the end to explore whatever local village we end up in! Expect to see some charming local pubs with never a pressure to drink alcohol.
All transport is organised by the committee, be it by private coach, national rail, bus or steam train. Our hikes typically range between 6 to 14 miles, with gradient information and difficulty ratings available for each walk.
For those who want even more, try our annual 30 mile TorEx challenge: a sponsored walk from Torquay to Exeter which runs in June to raise money for a charity chosen by members.
We go further afield for our two weekends away, incuding a Magical Mystery Tour in term 1! We organise accommodation, transport and meals. All you need to bring is some sturdy footwear! In previous years we have been to the Brecon Beacons, St Austell and Land’s End.
If weekly walks aren’t enough for you, we hold frequent socials... bowling, paddle boarding and crazy golf among them.
Whatever time of year you discover us, come along and see if this is the society for you.
Our goals for 2022:
- Helping as many of you to enjoy nature and the outdoors as possible
- Establishing a community feel by hosting weekly socials ranging from pub to paddleboarding and lots in between.
- Improving our inclusivity - establishing shorter, and more accessible walks to complement our existing programme for 2021 - 2022.
- Committees come and go but OODS is always open and welcoming to all!
