Society Description
Why We Want to Start the North American Society at the University of Exeter:
The primary motivation for creating this society is to build a vibrant and inclusive space that celebrates and shares the diverse cultural, social, and academic aspects of North America. We aim to provide a platform for both North American and non-North American students to connect, learn, and experience the richness of North American traditions and contemporary life.
Aims and Objectives:
Foster Cultural Exchange: Create a welcoming environment where students from diverse backgrounds can learn about and experience North American traditions, holidays, and lifestyles.
Celebrate Diversity: Showcase the unique cultures within North America, including those of Canada, the United States, and Mexico, emphasizing the multicultural aspects that define the region.
Build Community: Provide a space for North American students to feel at home while offering non-North American students the opportunity to engage with and understand North American culture.
Organize Social and Cultural Events: Host activities such as themed socials, holiday celebrations (e.g., Thanksgiving, Fourth of July, Día de los Muertos), and film screenings to promote cultural awareness.
Host Educational Workshops and Discussions: Offer workshops and guest speaker events on relevant topics like indigenous cultures, bilingualism in Canada, and North American social and political issues.
Facilitate Networking and Friendship: Create opportunities for members to form meaningful connections and build friendships through shared interests and experiences.
Support Academic Enrichment: Collaborate with university departments and other societies to organize panels, lectures, and discussions that provide insights into North America’s global influence and its academic relevance.
Engage in Collaborative Events: Work with other cultural and academic societies to host joint events that promote international understanding and shared learning.
Promote Inclusivity and Open Membership: Ensure the society is welcoming to everyone, whether they have personal ties to North America or a curiosity about its culture.
By achieving these aims, the North American Society will enrich the university experience for all members and promote a deeper understanding of North America’s place in the world.
