Society Description
Aims & Objectives:
The objectives of the International Athlete Society are:
• Provide Support: Offer guidance, encouragement, and resources to international athletes navigating new sports environments, cultural adjustments, and academic challenges.
• Foster Connections: Create opportunities for networking, open discussions, and collaboration among international athletes, helping them build a supportive community.
• Promote Integration: Assist international students in integrating into university life by organising social events and providing a platform for sharing experiences and advice.
• Celebrate Diversity: Showcase and celebrate the diverse sports cultures represented by international students through events, social media campaigns, and collaborative activities.
Motives:
International athletes often face several challenges when adjusting to university life in the UK, including:
• Separation from Family and Support Structures: Adjusting to life away from home, family, and established support systems.
• New Sports Environments: Adapting to unfamiliar sports facilities, coaching relationships, training methods, and team dynamics.
• Cultural, Language, and Climate Adjustments: Navigating cultural differences, language barriers, and new social norms, as well as adapting to the UK’s climate and dietary changes.
• Social Norms and Traditions: Understanding and adjusting to local traditions, including initiation rituals and first-year expectations.
Therefore, the society aims to address these challenges by creating a supportive environment where international athletes can thrive both on and off the field.
