Society Description
Over the summer, I (Mimi, the president) was in contact with a junior doctor who set up a national network of medical school societies under the name of "The Breast Project" with the objective to educate and cultivate aspiring breast surgeons. As it stands, there is no Exeter branch. Furthermore, breast surgery is not an area of medicine that medical students and other allied healthcare students routinely get to explore through our placements. Therefore, I think it would be worthwhile to start an Exeter branch for this national project.
Aims/objectives are to:
• To create an inclusive and safe learning environment in which everyone can get involved in both teaching and learning regardless of their experience, background and gender.
• To get people excited about breast surgery as a potential career option, as it is an important area of medicine that healthcare students do not get much exposure to whilst at university.
• To raise awareness about breast cancer (including breast cancer examinations) and women's health in general. This will involve trying to get non-healthcare students interested in learning about what to look out for with regards to breast cancer.
• To put people in contact with healthcare professionals in these areas of medicine (if they would like this) to help them with career ideas and CV-boosting.
